Unlocking Hidden Data Assets: A Research Initiative Seeking Data Licensing Opportunities
In the fast-paced world of business, companies often generate a wealth of valuable data that can drive innovation, inform research, and support strategic decision-making. However, when organizations shut down, pivot their operations, or shift focus, significant data assets can become overlooked or discarded—effectively going to waste. Recognizing this often untapped resource, a team of students from the University of California, Berkeley, is embarking on a research project aimed at bridging this gap.
About the Project
Our initiative focuses on exploring how data, especially in transitional or distressed circumstances, can be preserved, accessed, and utilized for meaningful research. We are particularly interested in acquiring or licensing datasets that are typically considered proprietary or sensitive, yet remain unused due to organizational changes or closures. Our goal is to identify datasets that might otherwise be lost and find ethical, legal ways to put them to good use.
The Types of Data We Seek
We are actively seeking access to various categories of data, including but not limited to:
- Experimental or testing data used in research or development phases
- Manufacturing and process data that detail operational workflows
- Product-related datasets, including design or usage data
- Operational data capturing day-to-day business functions
- Proprietary research datasets that are separate from patent filings
Importantly, we are interested in datasets that fall outside of patent protections and are available due to company closures, strategic pivots, or discontinued projects under U.S. law.
Who We’re Looking To Connect With
If you have experience working within a company that has undergone significant organizational changes—such as shutdowns, pivots, or divestitures—or if you know someone who does, we would love to connect. We are open to private discussions to explain our research objectives and explore potential data licensing opportunities. We are also willing to provide compensation for relevant, usable datasets.
Seeking Guidance on Connecting with Business Transitions
If this inquiry isn’t suited to this platform, we would greatly appreciate recommendations on where to find communities or networks that focus on distressed or restructuring businesses. Connecting with such groups could open avenues to access valuable data assets that are otherwise sidelined.
Get in Touch
We’re committed to ensuring that valuable data doesn’t go to waste and that organizational transitions can lead to new opportunities for research and innovation. If you have insights, connections, or datasets to share, please reach out. Your support could help unlock data resources that have the potential to advance knowledge and benefit broader communities.
Disclaimer: All data sharing and licensing arrangements will adhere strictly to legal and ethical standards, ensuring privacy and proprietary rights are respected.
By actively seeking to repurpose organizational data, we aim to contribute to more sustainable data practices and foster innovation through responsible data stewardship.
