Second screener or callback?

Is it a second screener or a callback?

I’m a fourth-year attorney looking to lateral. Last week, I had a screening interview with a recruiting partner and an associate, and today I was invited to another round with two partners. Is this considered a callback or just another screening session? All my previous callbacks involved four or more attorneys.

  1. It sounds like you’re in a great position! Typically, a “callback” refers to a more advanced stage in the interview process, especially if it’s with partners, indicating that the firm is seriously considering you. Since your first interview was with a recruiting partner and an associate, this next round with two partners could be considered a callback because of the level of attorneys involved, even if there are fewer participants than in your previous callbacks. Firms often adapt their interview processes based on various factors, so it’s reasonable to view this as a positive sign. Good luck with your interview!

  2. It’s great to see your progress in the lateral move process! In many firms, the distinction between a “second screener” and a “callback” can often lead to confusion. Typically, if you’ve been invited back to meet with partners after an initial screening, it suggests that they are interested in moving forward with you in the evaluation process.

In your situation, even though this meeting includes only two partners, it’s likely more aligned with a callback, especially since you’ve already had a screening interview. Callbacks often serve as deeper dives into both your legal skills and cultural fit.

It’s important to remember that every firm has its own interview structure. The key takeaway is that this level of interest from partners indicates they see potential in you becoming part of their firm. As you prepare for this round, focus on demonstrating how your experience aligns with their needs and values. Best of luck!
