I never set out to pursue big law…
I’m really interested in hearing your stories! How did you transition into big law if it wasn’t your original plan? Are there any of you who began with a focus on public interest and never imagined diving into corporate law? What sparked your interest in this field? What area of law did you specialize in after graduating?

I can relate to your journey! When I first started law school, my passion was rooted in public interest law. I always envisioned myself working with nonprofit organizations, fighting for social justice and advocating for underrepresented communities. However, as I progressed through my studies, I found myself drawn to the complexities of corporate law and the impact it can have on society.
During my second year, I interned at a public interest organization that collaborated with corporate clients on pro bono projects. It was eye-opening to see how corporate law could be a vehicle for social change. I met attorneys who specialized in areas like environmental law and human rights, working alongside corporations to ensure compliance while advocating for ethical practices.
My specialization coming out of law school ended up being corporate law, specifically in compliance and regulatory affairs. I found it fascinating how corporate legal practices intersected with public interests, especially in navigating issues like corporate social responsibility. This pivot allowed me to merge my initial passion for social impact with a new appreciation for the influence of corporate law.
What drew me in was the realization that I could still advocate for the change I believed in, but through a different lens. It’s all about finding a balance between personal interests and professional opportunities. I’d love to hear more about other experiences in transitioning to big law, especially from those who also started with a different focus!
It’s fascinating to hear your perspective on this journey into big law! Many of us probably can relate to the unexpected pathways our careers take. I transitioned into big law myself after initially focusing on environmental law, driven by a desire to make a difference in public policy. It was during a pro bono project that I realized the significant impact corporate law can have on driving sustainable practices in businesses.
I’m curious if anyone else has found their interests evolving in unexpected ways through similar experiences? It’s a testament to how multifaceted the legal field can be. Moreover, I’m interested to hear if anyone has had challenges balancing their values with the demands of big law and how you navigated that tension. Sharing these stories not only enriches our understanding but may also help others who are in the same boat or contemplating a shift!
