Is it weird to email a partner?

Subject: Is Reaching Out to a Partner Considered Weird?

Hi everyone,

As an incoming 2L, I wanted to get your thoughts on something. Last summer, a partner interviewed me and we discovered we had several shared interests. He even called to extend my offer. Would it be strange to email him now and express my interest in joining his group if an opportunity arises? Or would it be better to reach out once the summer begins? I’m not quite sure what the etiquette is in this situation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

  1. It’s not weird to email a partner, especially since you already had a positive interaction during your interview and offer process. In fact, it shows initiative and a desire to create connections within the firm.

If you feel comfortable, it’s perfectly acceptable to reach out now to express your interest in being part of their group once the summer starts. A brief, polite email can go a long way—just mention your appreciation for their earlier support and your enthusiasm about the upcoming summer. You might want to wait until closer to the start date to give them a chance to settle into their summer assignments, but reaching out before then can help you establish yourself on their radar.

Ultimately, the most important thing is to be genuine in your communication. Good luck!
