What would you do if not biglaw?

The Quirky Counsel: How One Lawyer’s Farm Roots Shape His biglaw Persona

In the high-stakes world of biglaw, every attorney needs a unique edge. For one particular ‘of counsel’ at our firm, that distinction is his hearty breakfast of six eggs a day. Hailing from a working farm in a Midwestern state often overlooked, this lawyer’s breakfast routine has become more than just a dietary choice—it’s an iconic part of his professional identity and a source of endless anecdotes.

His unwavering commitment to consuming six eggs each morning—come Monday, Saturday, or even Christmas—has evolved into something of a legend among our associates. When meeting him for the first time, it’s one of the first personal tidbits he’ll share, right after introducing himself.

What might seem like a quirky personal habit extends into his professional interactions and legal strategy. During an intense conference call on a foggy Saturday morning, involving legal partners, a number of our firm’s offices, and a significant client from the financial sector—an industry completely unrelated to poultry—chaos loomed. Our farm-fresh attorney stepped in to bring order, prefacing his legal insights with, “As a guy who eats six eggs a day.” With that, he clarified the legal complexities with precision, leaving clients intrigued by his unconventional approach.

His love for eggs even infiltrates email exchanges. Post-deal congratulatory emails usually contain straightforward kudos, but he once chimed in with the punny “EGGcellent work everybody!” Almost surreal in its levity, his humor stands out in a field known for its formalities.

The zenith of his egg-centric charm came during heated negotiations on a particularly tricky deal. Tempers were fraying, and patience wore thin when a female partner and he clashed during a meeting. Amid the tension, his voice tinged with humor broke through with the apt adage, “You can’t make an omelet without cracking a few eggs!” I had to take a breather outside, astonished and amused at how effortlessly he diffused the situation.

Reflecting on such colorful experiences makes me ponder alternative paths I could have taken. Maybe I might have ended up as a finance manager at a mundane firm. But the decisions that led me to law school and ultimately to this vibrant legal arena certainly have their upsides. What roads have you traveled to end up where you are today?
