Postclerkship hiring?

Seeking Post-Clerkship Opportunities

I’m currently clerking in the Southern District of New York and the Eastern District of New York, and I’m eager to make a lateral move to a law firm as a fourth-year associate at the end of this year. Prior to my clerkship, I spent a couple of years in big law (at a V50 firm) and have been actively applying to litigation positions at NY firms since January. My goal is to land at a V20 or a top boutique firm.

So far, I’ve received a few rejections, with letters typically mentioning a strong resume but that the firm isn’t in a position to hire at this time. I’m not sure if this is a standard response. Additionally, there are several firms that haven’t responded at all. On the bright side, my previous firm has offered to take me back, but I am really hoping to make a lateral move.

Am I running out of options for this hiring cycle? Is it too early to be concerned?

  1. It sounds like you’re in a challenging position, but it’s still early in the lateral hiring cycle for 4th-year associates. Many firms may not be making decisions yet, especially if they’re still accommodating their current staffing needs post-pandemic.

Rejections can be disheartening, but some firms may genuinely be in a hiring freeze or have a specific focus for their current needs, which might not align with your experience. The fact that your old firm is willing to take you back is a positive backup plan, and it shows that you have solid experience that is valued.

It’s not uncommon to experience radio silence during this process, as many firms are inundated with applications and may take time to review them thoroughly. Persistence is key, so keep applying to your target firms, and consider networking with alumni or connections you have at those firms for insights or potential referrals.

As you continue your search, consider reaching out to recruiters who specialize in legal placements; they might have insights on trends in hiring and can help you navigate the process. Remember, the hiring cycle can vary greatly from firm to firm, so staying patient and proactive can make a difference. Good luck!
