I am drowning in debt

Navigating Financial Turbulence: A Single Mom’s Journey Through Debt and Resilience

Navigating the contemporary financial landscape presents numerous challenges—a truth to which I can certainly attest. Until recently, I was maintaining an intense work schedule, juggling a full-time position in the office from 8 AM until 5 PM, and a part-time evening role at a local restaurant from 6 PM until 2 AM. Unfortunately, with the closure of the restaurant last November, my income took a significant hit, leaving me relying solely on my primary job’s salary, insufficient to cover all my expenses.

As a single mother to two precious daughters, managing financial commitments extends beyond mere budgeting; it involves orchestrating child care, which has become a complex challenge. My parents have graciously helped with babysitting, but due to the long hours required, additional childcare costs were inevitable. Compounding these challenges is the absence of financial support from my children’s father. Despite attempts to secure child support, his employment off the books leaves me with no assistance, and he remains absent from their lives.

In an effort to bridge financial gaps, I resorted to taking out a personal loan to address essentials like groceries and mounting credit card debts. However, repayment difficulties have emerged, damaging my credit score further as I missed several payments. Presently, maintaining a balance among expenses such as rent, utilities, education, groceries, and transportation feels like a tightrope act.

Adding to the stress, today I received a notification regarding expired car tags and an alarming $7,000 debt from unpaid tolls, attributed to mistakes linked to my FastTrack account. This situation has left me unable to renew my car tags since April, racking up stress as I continue to drive with expired documentation. Driving remains my only viable transportation option for commuting a 25-mile distance to work, yet the dread of financial penalties or worse, impoundment, looms large.

In seeking solutions, I’ve considered various avenues, including unconventional ones like picking up weekend work in a strip club. However, pursuing this route is complex, given the potential for familial discord should my parents discover this effort. It’s a risk I’m hesitant to take as it could jeopardize the support structure crucial for my family’s well-being.

To navigate through these hardships, I have already eliminated several non-essential expenses such as personal grooming sessions, routine Target excursions, and my once favorite indulgences like Starbucks and fast food. Every bit helps in this uphill battle.
