No sure if this would be a feel good for not. Went to a credit union and they helped me get my life back.

How a Credit Union Helped Me Regain My Financial Footing

I was once overwhelmed by a mountain of debt and financial challenges that seemed insurmountable. Over a span of five years, I accumulated $53,000 in credit card debt. Much of it stemmed from being overly generous despite my financial struggles, navigating the aftermath of a relationship that didn’t survive the pandemic, and grappling with personal mental health issues. Before long, I found myself relying on credit cards for basic necessities like groceries, a clear sign of how dire my situation had become.

Despite securing a new job with a substantial pay increase, my financial reality remained grim. I was constantly treading water, using almost half of my monthly income solely to meet minimum payment requirements. Regular therapy sessions helped me address some of my mental health struggles, but financial stress continued to loom large.

In an unexpected turn of events, a visit to my local credit union to open a simple checking account for discretionary spending changed everything. Even though I initially didn’t meet their minimum credit score requirement (I was at 620, just shy of their 640 threshold), the staff went above and beyond to assist me. They provided guidance on managing my direct deposits and devised a strategy for tackling my debt within my means.

Fast forward just four months, and my credit score climbed to 645. This improvement, along with persistent support from the credit union team—including enthusiastic backing from their underwriters—enabled me to open a 0% APR credit card for balance transfers up to $18,000. Additionally, I secured a $30,000 line of credit at 12.5% interest and an unsecured debt consolidation loan for $5,000 at 13.75%. These crucial steps are part of a broader, five-year debt repayment plan. To safeguard my progress, I enrolled in an “unemployment insurance plan,” which covers my payments in the event of job loss for up to nine months.

Furthermore, to avoid temptation, I canceled all but my oldest credit card, keeping it stored safely out of reach, both physically and digitally. This move freed up $600 each month, significantly reducing my financial burden. Together with the credit union, I also devised savings plans aligned with various personal goals, ensuring I remain financially stable and prevent future setbacks.

The attentive and personalized assistance provided by the credit union staff left me deeply grateful. Unlike many financial institutions, they took the time to explain my options and helped me navigate out of this
